Myrtle rust, manuka honey and the impact of neonicotinoids on bees are just some of the current topics that have been making global headlines. These and more will steer the conversations at the Apiculture New Zealand national conference this weekend.
A record 1200 plus people from around the country and abroad will be in Rotorua for the conference, which will be held at the Rotorua Energy Events Centre from Sunday 9 July to Tuesday 11 July 2017.
Presentations from world-renowned scientists, honey testing and cooking workshops and a trade function featuring over 120 booths are just some of the main attractions of the event.
In New Zealand, apiculture is a multi-million-dollar industry and its history of good beekeeping practice, along with this country’s strict pest management regime, have helped contribute to a thriving beekeeping industry.
But the industry recognises the need to be vigilant. This year’s theme is “Bee-ing Prepared: Business: Knowledge: Risk,” where experts on bee health, biodiversity and international market trends will share their knowledge.
“There’s a spotlight on our growing industry,” says Karin Kos, chief executive of Apiculture New Zealand.
“The conference is an opportunity to celebrate our successes and to learn more about protecting our bees and ensuring sustainable growth over the longer term.”
